We. Are. Doomed

Follow me on Twitter. For the banter.

Thread rant of the day

So, this was tweeted by a Spurs fan:

We had Spurs fan moan were not winning, we now won a game with a clean sheet and they moan the football was boring. I'm sorry but give me a borefest every game if they finally lift a trophy. (@hartnett1977)

That old chestnut. It inspired the usual rambling deconstruction. I’ve curated my tweet and some responses directly off my timeline (so excuse grammar and typos).

If football is solely about winning trophies, the absolute be all and end all, that none of the rest matters - none of it - so much so you're willing to sacrifice it all, then the wrong football club chose you to support them.

People seem to think that just because some of us want to see Spurs play entertaining, swaggering football that somehow this is an admittance that we do not want to win anything.

Not every successful club has played outstandingly brilliant football. The 2 years under Poch, we played the best football in the country and won nothing. It's hardly a complexity, You need a bit of everything to contend and win something. But this attitude whereby some... .

..nah, f_ck it m8. Just win at all costs, play ded football if you have to...I JUST WANT US TO WIN SOMETHING. It's just a bit weird. I know we are starved, haven't lucked out in finals/semi-finals. We would all accept the sh_thousery of winning a cup playing dull football, but..

...don't wish it on us ffs. Just a woeful take on it all. COYS

Maybe after the last 5 years some us who loved the exhilarating breathtaking stuff are contented not to witness another swaggering glorious fall at the final hurdle. A boring series of efficient 1 nils culminating in a cup or two, doesn’t seem the worse case scenario. (@Tenorsaw)

I get this. One or two of these in the mix can make all the difference. No doubt. But all of the time? It will never sit well with me.

what if it’s 1-0 all along and then falling at the final hurdle though? so much worse than losing while playing enjoyable football. (@corluka)

There's a middle ground for sure. Say, for example, the Peak Poch side. Bullish, spirited, swarming. But what if we mixed it up with the occasional tactical masterclass, Peak Mourinho style? To get points that mattered or cement progress to the next round? What people don't seem to realise is, to have the mixture of both - at the levels we produced and expect - then you've struck gold. Or rather silver. It's not half as easy as we like to think it is.

We haven’t played flowing football for 18 months under Poch or mourinho. It’s a personnel issue before a management one. Walker, dembele, Eriksen, on form rose and on form alli critical to this. 3 have left and not been replaced properly, 2 lost mojo. That’s half the team. (@RyanJacobson1)

This a difficult period. I think we have to suffer it to get where we want to be.

This is it. I'd take a scrappy Mourinho semi final or final win if that was our best chance of success but at the moment we're scrapping through games that we ought to be able to win in style. Sit deep against Liverpool away and play on the counter, but Norwich at home, attack. (@s17pur)

It feels like we're bridging the gap towards a proper restart. I hope that's the case.

Polite reminder that Jose spent approx £300m in 2 years to win a few cups at Man U. (@ChrismanSpurs)

We. Are. Doomed.

From my perspective, if we'd had beaten Sheff Utd people wouldn't be so up in arms how we won last night. Adaptability is the key, some games we win with aplomb others more cautiously.

As someone said to me last night, if we had a few games like last night over the last few years we might have had a couple of trophies in the bag. (@DomCMM)

Yes. I said this earlier. A middle ground. Brutally ironic that Jose has certain traits (of experience and ruthless stubbornness) that Poch lacked.
